Dr. Freek Olaf de Groot is an Assistant Professor in the ELLS program at UIC. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading. His research focuses on mediated discourse analysis, multimodality and digital literacy development with a particular interest in English language teacher education. Recent publications have explored how learners make use of digital technology outside the classroom and its potential for in-class English learning and teaching. Before joining UIC he was Director of Language of Language Center at the Asian Institute of technology in Bangkok and taught at the University of Reading, UK, City University of Hong Kong and Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to his academic work, he has worked on various international teacher training projects and professional development initiatives for English language education.
